How to Become a Good Writer ? Prof Dr. Varinder Bhatia

Writing is the art of establishing oneself as an effective communicator through words. For many people, becoming a good writer is a demanding and gradual process. Our thoughts often move much faster than our ability to put them into words. Good writing, therefore, is essentially the ability to transform ideas into clear, meaningful and engaging prose.

There is a growing demand for people with strong writing skills in print and digital media, education, publishing and several other fields. With some discipline and regular practice, anyone can use their spare time to develop the ability to express thoughts, feelings and ideas effectively. A few basic principles can help aspiring writers improve their craft.

Keep the beginning crisp and engaging

A lengthy introduction can quickly reduce a reader's interest. Instead of taking a long route to the subject, get to the central issue without unnecessary elaboration. Avoid repetition and do not say more than is required. Excessive writing can dilute the impact of an otherwise good idea.

Whatever you write should be read and revised at least two or three times. Editing helps remove unnecessary material and improves clarity. One of the fundamental principles of communication is simple: say more with fewer words.

Develop your own writing style

Style plays an important role in writing. Every writer gradually develops a distinctive voice through reading, observation and continuous practice. Developing such a style takes time, but it should never be forced. Avoid artificial ornamentation or an excessive attempt to impress the reader. Write naturally and allow your personality and ideas to find expression through your words. When writing becomes natural, a distinctive and authentic voice gradually emerges.

Let writing remain natural

Writing is a creative process that provides an opportunity to express one's thoughts, experiences and abilities. The writer should focus on communicating ideas rather than trying too hard to influence or impress the reader. Writers should also avoid unnecessary self-praise or repeatedly emphasising their own achievements. Such overstatement can weaken the credibility of the article. A balanced and modest approach generally makes writing more convincing.

Use words carefully

The excessive use of adjectives and adverbs can sometimes weaken rather than strengthen an argument. Similarly, inappropriate or poorly chosen words may change the intended meaning of a sentence. When presenting a change in thought or moving from one argument to another, transitional words such as “however,” “but,” “therefore,” “instead,” “now” and “later” can help guide the reader. Such expressions provide continuity and make the writer's argument easier to follow.

Keep paragraphs short

Long, dense paragraphs can discourage readers, particularly in newspaper and digital writing. Dividing an article into short, well-structured paragraphs creates visual ease and allows readers to absorb ideas more comfortably.

A good writer should also avoid unnecessary comparisons with others. Writing is not a race. Like the familiar story of the tortoise and the hare, steady and consistent effort can ultimately lead to meaningful results. Developing maturity as a writer requires patience, practice and self-confidence.

Read good writers

Perhaps the most effective way to become a better writer is to become a regular reader. Read articles, essays and books by established writers. Pay attention not only to what they write but also to how they write—their structure, vocabulary, rhythm, arguments and style of expression.

Writing improves through practice, but practice becomes far more productive when it is accompanied by thoughtful reading and careful editing.

Ultimately, there is no shortcut to becoming a good writer. Read widely, think deeply, write regularly and edit carefully. With time and perseverance, the blank page can become a powerful medium for ideas and expression.
