Artificial Intelligence and School Education By Dr. Varinder Bhatia

Batala (Punjab) -  The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in school education has become a subject of growing discussion and debate. AI, whose origins can be traced to the 1950s, refers to artificially developed intellectual capabilities that enable computer or robotic systems to perform tasks based on reasoning and processes that resemble those of the human mind.

Technology has always played an important role in education, and AI is now being used in school education in several ways to assist students in learning. Its use can not only improve the effectiveness of learning but also augment human intelligence during the learning process. AI has the potential to enhance every child's ability to learn and develop intellectual capabilities.

Artificial Intelligence is a rapidly evolving technology that is transforming several sectors, including education. Across the country, various initiatives are currently being undertaken to integrate AI into school education. It can be used to improve students' learning outcomes, provide greater support to teachers and make the education system more efficient.

There are several advantages to using AI in education. It can help improve curriculum content and tailor learning material according to students' interests and learning styles. Efforts are already underway in several states to use AI to make educational content more personalised. AI can also help answer students' questions, provide them with individualised practice and offer guidance based on their learning progress.

AI can therefore become a powerful tool for school education, but its implementation also presents several challenges. At present, AI technology can be expensive, making its adoption difficult for many schools. Teachers who use AI also need to invest time and effort in learning how these technologies work and how they can be used effectively in classrooms. At the same time, ensuring the safety, privacy and security of students remains extremely important.

Whenever a new technology is introduced into people's lives too quickly, its possible adverse consequences may not be fully understood. Students and teachers must first be taught about the responsible use of technology. Children, in particular, need to understand how to use AI in a healthy and productive manner. Therefore, there should be no rush to introduce AI into school curricula without adequate preparation. Learning how to use technology effectively in education is itself a challenge for both students and teachers.

In most cases, the problem is that teachers are not adequately trained to use new technologies in their classrooms. The question is: who will take the initiative? Why not provide students and teachers with tablets or computers for educational purposes, along the lines of initiatives such as school uniforms and mid-day meals?

Such a step could help students from economically weaker backgrounds access recorded video lessons and other digital learning resources. It could also reduce the weight of school bags by making more educational material available digitally. In addition, digital tools could help address some of the challenges arising from the student-teacher ratio and prepare students more effectively for emerging technologies such as AI. One of the major advantages of AI is that students can use study material according to their individual needs. The difficulty level can be adjusted according to their understanding and learning ability. Often, notes and other study material are scattered, complicated or poorly organised, and a considerable amount of time is spent arranging and condensing them. AI can help organise such material systematically and present it in a concise and accessible form.

Artificial Intelligence in education is also a controversial subject. Some scholars argue that AI could eventually replace teachers and take away the human element from education. This concern, however, should not be overstated. AI has tremendous potential to transform both the present and the future of school education. It can also promote access to non-traditional forms of education, including distance and online learning. This could provide students living in rural and remote areas with greater opportunities to access quality education.

In the rapidly evolving educational landscape, AI is emerging as a transformative force, changing the way students learn and teachers teach. Its ability to process vast amounts of data, adapt to individual learning requirements and enhance teaching methods is reshaping education in unprecedented ways. From personalised learning experiences to intelligent learning systems, the impact of AI on present and future education is likely to be profound and far-reaching.

AI is transforming education by providing personalised learning experiences, empowering teachers and expanding access to quality education. As we navigate the emerging role of AI in education, it is essential to strike a balance between technological advancement and the human touch that remains fundamental to effective teaching and learning.

By using AI , responsibly, we can create an educational system that is more inclusive, adaptive and empowering for all learners. AI is already being used to understand the intellectual and learning capabilities of students and develop appropriate and precise learning content for them. Based on detailed analysis of how individual students learn, new teaching models and patterns are being developed to suit their specific requirements. In many ways, this represents a revolution in education, with millions of students benefiting from such technologies every day.

It would not be wrong to say that AI is emerging as one of the major requirements of the future. From education to business, there is hardly any sector where AI is not being used.

People's dependence on AI has increased over time and is likely to grow further in the coming years. State governments should take appropriate steps to expand the role of Artificial Intelligence in school education and make adequate arrangements for training teachers in its effective and responsible use. A well-planned approach to AI education, backed by teacher training and equal access to digital resources, can help accelerate the pace of continuous development across the states.
