Indian filmmaker and NYFA’s former student Raj Sagar is part of a new wave of storytellers proving that independent cinema can be both visually ambitious and emotionally compelling. His upcoming sci-fi short Beacon combines practical filmmaking, visual effects, and character-driven storytelling.
Currently studying filmmaking in the United States, Sagar sees Beacon as more than a technical achievement. His goal is to demonstrate that ambitious science fiction can be created outside the traditional studio system through creativity, collaboration, and innovation.
A major highlight of the film is the performance of Italian actress Marie Nives Ellecosta, who portrays Judy, a brilliant and fearless character whose determination drives much of the narrative. Having collaborated with Ellecosta on previous productions, Sagar wrote the role specifically for her, recognizing her remarkable ability to bring emotional authenticity to every scene.
Ellecosta stands out with a strong magnetic presence, remarkable emotional truth, and unmistakable Italian savoir-faire. Her performance gives Judy both vulnerability and strength, making the character one of the film's emotional anchors. According to Sagar, her meticulous preparation and openness to experimentation created an atmosphere of trust that elevated the production and allowed the creative team to discover unexpected moments throughout filming.
Beacon also embodies the energy of New York's independent filmmaking scene, where talented young filmmakers and actors from around the world are reshaping the industry's creative landscape. Through international collaborations like this one, artists such as Raj Sagar and Marie Nives Ellecosta are demonstrating that compelling stories know no borders, and that the future of independent cinema is increasingly global.
